Secret Santa Wheel: How to Run a Live Draw on a Video Call

Published October 9, 2026 · 8 min read

A spinning wheel looks like the obvious tool for Secret Santa, but a plain wheel is the wrong one for the pairing: it can land on you, everyone sees every result and nobody can keep a match secret. Here is how to run the draw properly on a video call with a free private draw tool, and where a wheel is the perfect fit instead. It takes about five minutes to set up and needs no signup.

A wheel is great for the fun parts of Secret Santa. The pairing itself needs a private draw.

Why a plain wheel does not work for Secret Santa

Secret Santa has rules that a normal spinner ignores. If you simply spin once per person, four things go wrong.

A free Secret Santa draw tool you can share on a call

This tool creates one draw for the whole group and gives you a single link. Everyone opens the link on their own device, picks their own name and sees only their own match. Nothing is uploaded to a server: the names sit inside the link itself, and each person's match is worked out in their browser from a random seed stored in the link.

It never lets anyone draw themselves, can block pairs you choose (such as couples) and, by default, avoids mutual pairs where two people get each other. The shuffle uses the browser's cryptographic random generator, and the same method as the wheel on this site, described on our fairness page.

1. Set up your draw

Nothing is uploaded. The names live inside the link itself.

How to run Secret Santa on Zoom, Teams or Google Meet

This works for remote teams, families who live apart and office groups.

Where a spinning wheel is perfect for Secret Santa

Keep the wheel for the public, playful parts of the event, where everyone is meant to watch.

Rules that keep Secret Santa fair and drama-free

How private are the matches, and where are the limits?

The link contains the names, your rules and the random seed, but not a list of matches. Nothing is sent to our servers when you create or open a draw, so we cannot see your names or matches. The part of a link after the "#" is not sent to a website when a page loads.

There are limits worth knowing. Anyone who has the link can work out any match if they choose to look, so this relies on honesty, the same as drawing names from a hat. The person who creates the link could also look up every match, so if that matters, ask someone who is not taking part to create it. And, as with any browser tool, we cannot prove what happened on your device. For a tiny office or a family, it is more than enough; for a high-stakes draw, use an independent organiser.

Gift ideas that work on any budget

If you are stuck, a short list helps. Good gifts are small, useful and personal rather than expensive.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use a spinning wheel for Secret Santa?

A wheel is great for the fun parts, such as gift-opening order and games, but a plain wheel is poor for the pairing: it can pick you, shows every result publicly and cannot keep matches secret. Use a private draw for the pairing.

How do I do Secret Santa online with a remote team?

Collect names and a budget, create one draw link, share it in your team chat and let each person open it on their own device to see only their own match. Then hold a gift reveal on a video call.

How do I stop couples getting each other in Secret Santa?

Add a rule in the draw tool, for example "Maya & Daniel". The draw will never give those two people each other.

Is this Secret Santa generator really private?

Nothing is uploaded to our servers, and each match is worked out in the browser from the link. Anyone with the link could look up any match, so it relies on honesty, like drawing names from a hat.
