About this wheel
Animals are a reliable favourite with children and a flexible topic for learning. A wheel makes the choice fair and exciting, and it gives shy children a way to join in without having to choose.
The starter list has fifteen familiar animals from different habitats. Replace it with animals from the region or topic you are studying.
How to use it
- Spin and read the animal aloud.
- Choose an activity: draw it, act it, describe it or find three facts.
- For a game, players guess the animal from clues or charades.
- Remove the animal and spin again for variety.
- Collect all the animals you have spun into a class book or poster.
Ways to customise it
- Make habitat wheels: ocean, rainforest, desert, farm
- Add endangered species for a conservation lesson
- Add local wildlife for a nature walk
- Use the image wheel to add pictures for early readers
Tips
Pair the wheel with a short question: Where does it live? What does it eat? How does it move? This turns a game into a mini research task.
For young children, use an image wheel so they can recognise the animals without reading.
